GoHighLevel Email Unsubscribe: 7 Easy Setup Checks

Your unsubscribe link looks correct, but does it actually update the contact’s email preferences?

A GoHighLevel email unsubscribe setup has several parts: the link in the message, the page or confirmation flow, and the contact status that controls future marketing emails. Checking only the footer can leave a broken connection unnoticed.

This guide walks through seven practical checks, covering LC Email’s default link, built-in unsubscribe flows, an optional custom workflow, and a controlled test you can repeat before sending a campaign.

What Should Your GoHighLevel Email Unsubscribe Setup Achieve?

A useful unsubscribe experience gives the reader a clear choice and makes the result visible in your CRM.

Before changing anything, write down your expected outcome. For example:

“When a contact finishes unsubscribing, their email preference should update, and later marketing email should respect that choice.”

That sentence gives you something concrete to test.

Separate three questions:

Part of the setupQuestion to answer
Message linkCan the recipient find and open it?
Unsubscribe experienceWhat action completes the opt-out?
Contact recordDid the expected preference update?

A page displaying a success message is only one part of that journey. Verify the contact record as well.

1. Identify the Email Setup You Use

Start your GoHighLevel email unsubscribe review in the correct sub-account.

Write down whether you use LC Email or another sending setup, where the message originates, and whether the footer uses a built-in link or a custom trigger link.

A campaign template and a workflow email may contain different footer content. Review the actual message you plan to send rather than assuming every template shares the same configuration.

Create a small inventory:

  • Campaigns currently in use.
  • Workflow emails sent to prospects.
  • Reusable templates.
  • Any custom unsubscribe page.
  • Any workflow responsible for changing communication preferences.

For each item, record the owner and the date you checked it. This makes future template changes easier to review.

The LC Email instructions below apply to LC Email’s documented default-link feature. Do not assume another provider uses the same controls.

For LC Email, open Settings → Business Profile → General and review Include Unsubscribe Link. When enabled, the configured content is added to outgoing email footers.

For manual placement, HighLevel documents the supported tag {{unsubscribe}}, or the UNSUBSCRIBE LINK option under EMAIL custom values. The tag becomes a clickable link when the message is sent.

Using both the automatic footer and a manual tag can produce two links. Review the delivered message before changing either method.

See the official LC Email unsubscribe-link guide.

Keep the link readable on a phone. Use a clear label and enough contrast against the footer background.

If you redesign your template, add unsubscribe testing to the review checklist. Moving blocks around can change what readers see even when the rest of the email looks polished.

3. Review the Built-In Unsubscribe Flow

For the built-in GoHighLevel email unsubscribe experience, open Marketing → Emails → Campaigns → Settings gear → Unsubscribe. Choose the flow, use Preview, and save.

HighLevel documents three options:

FlowWhat completes the unsubscribe?
One-StepClicking the unsubscribe link
Two-StepCompleting an additional confirmation
DynamicUsually the click; specified cases require confirmation

In Dynamic mode, confirmation is required when the click happens within five minutes of delivery or the contact record is less than one hour old.

This is an account-level setting. Changes apply to emails sent after the update and do not rewrite previous unsubscribe data.

Review the official unsubscribe-flow guide.

Choose the experience deliberately, then record what the reader must do to finish. A screenshot of the first page alone may not show whether a confirmation was completed.

4. Check Any Custom Unsubscribe Workflow

A custom GoHighLevel email unsubscribe setup needs its own review.

HighLevel’s documented approach uses a published landing page, a trigger link pointing to that page, and a workflow configured with:

  1. Trigger Link Clicked.
  2. A filter selecting the exact unsubscribe trigger link.
  3. Set Contact DND → Enable DND for Specific Channels → Email.
  4. A saved and published workflow.
  5. The saved trigger link inserted into the email footer.

HighLevel notes that an unpublished workflow can still leave the landing page accessible while the DND action does not run.

Follow its custom unsubscribe setup guide when reviewing that implementation.

Do not assume a custom trigger-link workflow inherits the built-in confirmation experience. Test the route you actually built.

If you are learning how these links connect to workflows, read our previous guide: GoHighLevel Trigger Links: 7 Easy Steps to Track Clicks.

5. Verify Email DND and Activity

After testing your GoHighLevel email unsubscribe link, open the test contact and inspect the relevant DND status.

HighLevel supports channel-specific DND. Its activity and conversation logs can identify whether a DND change came from a workflow, a user, or the contact.

Email DND also has specific transactional exceptions. HighLevel lists Payments (Invoices), Calendar notifications, and Notifications as categories that can bypass it; marketing and promotional emails continue to honor Email DND.

Use the official DND guide to interpret those results.

Record the before-and-after status and the change source. If your custom workflow applies an “Unsubscribed” tag for reporting, check the actual DND setting too. A reporting label should not be your only evidence that the preference changed.

Review automations that alter DND. A later action could explain why the current state differs from the result you observed earlier.

6. Test the Journey From a Delivered Message

Test your GoHighLevel email unsubscribe setup with an address and contact you control.

Use a controlled send through the same campaign or workflow route you intend to use. A visual preview helps with appearance, while the delivered message lets you inspect the actual link.

Follow this sequence:

  1. Record the test contact’s current email preference.
  2. Send the message through the intended route.
  3. Open it on a phone or desktop.
  4. Use the unsubscribe link.
  5. Complete any required confirmation.
  6. Reopen the contact record.
  7. Compare the preference and recent activity with your expected result.
  8. If a custom workflow is involved, inspect its enrollment and action results.

Then run a controlled marketing-email check for that same test contact and verify how the system handles the updated preference.

Keep customer records out of this test. Your own contact is sufficient to inspect the behavior.

Use a simple test log:

CheckExpected resultActual result
Footer visibilityLink is readable and easy to findRecord what you see
DestinationIntended page or flow opensRecord the destination
CompletionRequired action is clearRecord what you completed
Contact statusExpected email preference appearsRecord the status
Later marketing sendUpdated preference is respectedRecord the outcome

This is a test template, not a claim that the setup has already passed.

7. Check the Resubscribe Experience

Your GoHighLevel email unsubscribe review should also consider someone who opted out by mistake.

HighLevel documents a contact-initiated option in the unsubscribe feedback questionnaire: Unsubscribed by mistake, subscribe again. Selecting it and submitting the form restores email subscription status.

For a custom experience, verify that the relevant resubscribe option is actually available. Check the contact record after submission; historical campaign statistics may continue showing an unsubscribe for a period.

See the official resubscribe guide.

Do not automatically restore marketing eligibility simply because a contact later opens another page or remains in your CRM.

Document the contact’s action and your observed result. That helps another team member understand why the current status changed.

GoHighLevel Email Unsubscribe Not Working? Start Here

Inspect the message’s actual footer method. For LC Email, compare the Business Profile setting with the template’s manual unsubscribe placement.

Check the delivered email rather than relying only on the editor canvas.

The Page Opens, but the Preference Does Not Change

Identify whether this is the built-in flow or a custom implementation.

For a custom workflow, check publication status, the exact trigger-link filter, and the DND action result.

A Confirmation Page Appears During Testing

Compare what happened with the selected flow and the Dynamic conditions described earlier.

Write down the delivery time and contact creation time so you can explain the test result.

The Contact Still Receives an Email

Identify the message category, its sending route, the current Email DND state, and any later preference changes.

Use that evidence to distinguish a marketing message from a documented transactional exception.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an Unsubscribed Tag Replace Email DND?

Use the tag as a reporting aid. Verify the actual email preference separately before treating the setup as complete.

First inventory the templates and sending routes that depend on it. Prepare and test your replacement before changing a shared setting.

Can a Contact Subscribe Again?

HighLevel provides a contact-initiated resubscribe option through its feedback questionnaire. Test its availability in the experience you use.

No. This test checks the unsubscribe journey. Inbox placement requires its own investigation and should not be inferred from a successful opt-out.

Make Your Unsubscribe Journey Easy to Verify

A dependable GoHighLevel email unsubscribe setup connects the reader’s choice to an observable contact preference.

Check the delivered link, complete the intended flow, inspect the contact record, and test how later marketing messages are handled.

Keep a short record of the configuration and test results. Repeat the checks whenever you change a footer, landing page, workflow, or unsubscribe setting.
